direct flights from Vancouver to JFK airport, and Continental Airlines have direct flights from Vancouver to Newark Liberty International Airport. From the airports you have easy transfer into Manhattan by bus, air train or taxi.
Overall Impressions: It is easy to understand why New York’ nickname is the city that never sleeps. The adrenalin hits you as soon as you arrive, and this vibrant city offers an endless choice of things to do and see with its world class museums, Broadway shows, sightseeing, shopping and dining options from elegant restaurants to food stands and the renowned New York delis.
Hotels: We were fortunate to have the opportunity to stay at a couple of the city’s best known hotels:
The St. Regis Hotel (5th Ave at 55th) is a beautiful 5 diamond hotel with an excellent location close to 6th Ave (Fashion Ave) & Madison Ave, Park Ave and Central Park. This iconic hotel was the original Beaux Arts classic landmark commissioned by John Jacob Astor in 1904. The lobby is small but quaint; the rooms are elegantly styled with large beds, the softest comforters, advanced electronics, and very large marble floored bathrooms. The butler is at your beck and call with only a touch of a button. To unwind after a long day, try a Bloody Mary at the Old King Cole bar (claimed to be the drink’s birthplace) or a late supper at Adour (by Alain Ducasse) restaurant (where you can select your wine
from a touch screen menu). All in all a very upscale property in a great location that offers outstanding service.
The Plaza (5th Ave at 59th – Central Park South) Now a Fairmont managed property, this luxurious hotel reopened this year, after being closed for 3 years to complete a 400 million renovation. A classic Lalique crystal chandelier adorns the new bright, spacious and inviting lobby and the champagne bar located off to the side is a great place to refresh oneself after a long day of shopping. The rooms, which are generous in size (starting at 475 sq ft), are elegantly decorated with modern tones and all rooms/floors have the same feel; they host a new contemporary look without losing the grandeur of the past. Each room is fully equipped with a state of the art portable command centre to control all electronics such as lights, temperature, and music and to summon the butler.
Travel Tips: We highly recommend the Grayline Hop On/Off Tour. It is a great way to discover all the major sights and return to your favorite places. The subway system is also a great way to get around town and of course no trip to New York would
be complete without a taxi ride. Same Day Broadway and Off Broadway Show Tickets can be purchased at half prices at the TKTS Booth at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square. Usually a lot of tickets are available; however some of the newer shows are not available same day.
